Cell Biology Exam 6
There are two questions on this exam. They are due on or before May 20, 2008
Dr Richard Hunt
Retroviruses have long terminal repeats in their proviral (DNA) form. What is an LTR? How are they different from the termini of the RNA form of the virus? Why do retroviruses have LTRs? What are the consequences of the possession of an LTR for the virus and the host cell? Please be concise and answer the question in no more than three pages
Dr Margaret Hunt
Viruses (including
bacteriophage) frequently shut down host protein synthesis either directly or by
decreasing the amount of host mRNA present. Discuss some of the mechanisms
involved. Chose one of these mechanisms and suggest some experimental approaches
you might use to investigate whether or not it is being used by a virus.
