Information that is needed to
complete your application
Before an
application may be evaluated, the application form (paper or
electronic) must be supplemented with these additional
materials that may be submitted separately but must be
identified with the same applicant name:
- A personal
statement defining research interests and objectives for
graduate study. The personal statement may be mailed
or may be sent or attached to an e-mail (biomed@med.sc.edu)
- Three
letters of recommendation, preferably from professors or
supervisors knowledgeable about your academic
qualifications. You may use the official USC form
(pdf) or a sealed personal letter.
- Transcripts
of all previous undergraduate and graduate work.
- GRE
scores. The general section must have been taken within
the last 5 years. A relevant
subject test score is useful but not essential. For
score report, the institutional code for the University of
South Carolina is 5818. More information on the GRE is here
- Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL). International
students must also provide a TOEFL score of at least 570 on
the paper test or 230 on the computer test. For score report, the
institutional code for the University of South Carolina is
5818. The University of South Carolina application for immigration document may
be completed after notification of admission. The
assistantship stipend qualifies as the required financial
support. More information on the TOEFL is here
Financial
Aid and Applicant Visits
- Students admitted to the Ph.D.
program receive financial support for living expenses with a
stipend of $17,500 - 22,000 per year, as well as tuition
reduction for both state residents and non-residents. Out of
the stipend, students pay approximately $950 per semester in
tuition fees. The cost of living in the Columbia area is
lower than the national average.
- Most Masters in Biomedical
Science students receive stipend support from their thesis
director in the second year of study; this support also
includes tuition reduction for both state residents and
non-residents. The Masters in Biomedical Science
program does not provide stipend support to first
year students but does assist with application for student
loans.
- Applicants are encouraged to
visit the School of Medicine when possible. Applicant
visits will include a tour of the facilities and
opportunities to meet faculty and students.
Admission
Criteria
Admission decisions are made on the
basis of an overall evaluation of the applicant's preparation
and ability to complete advanced study in Biomedical Science.
Particular attention is paid to the applicant's research
interests and motivation. The criteria for admission include the
following:
- A bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university, with at least two
semesters each of biology, physics, chemistry (inorganic and
organic), and mathematics (preferably through calculus).
- Research experience is preferred
but not essential.
- An average of 3.0
("B") or better is preferred both in the major and

admitted to the Ph.D. program was 3.38, and the average GPA
for the students admitted to the Masters program was 3.01.
- GRE scores on the general
section above the 50th percentile are preferred. In
recent years, the average GRE for the students admitted to
the Ph.D. program was Verbal: 519, 62%; Quantitative: 659,

students admitted to the Masters program was Verbal: 443,
44%; Quantitative: 655, 68%; Analytical: 621, 64%.
Most applications are reviewed in
February through April for admission to the fall semester.
Applicants who wish to be considered for graduate research
assistantships should see that their applications are complete
no later than April 1, however earlier application is encouraged
since stipends are awarded on a rolling basis.
