GRADUATE PROGRAM DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
The Ph.D. program in the Department
of Pathology and Microbiology is part of the Biomedical Sciences
program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Please use the link at the left to go to more information about
the Ph.D. in Biomedical Science and the Master of Biomedical
Science (MBS) programs
Students
are admitted to the Biomedical Sciences program for either degree
and enter a department after they have chosen a mentor. The
student's department will be that of his or her faculty advisor.
While most students choose a mentor, and therefore a department,
in their first year, potential students who have a firm idea of
the research that they wish to pursue may agree with a potential
mentor to enter a specific laboratory immediately on starting the
program. In this case, the student enters the mentor's department
right away. The program below
describes the courses that a student will take if they choose a
mentor affiliated with the Department of Pathology and
Microbiology by the end of the first semester. The first semester
of the first year is the same for all graduate students in the
Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. and MBS programs. During the first
semester, students do one or two rotations in the laboratories of
potential mentors. These rotations can be in any department. A
decision may be made after either of these rotations to stay with
an advisor or to continue with another rotation. Although more
rotations may be undertaken, it is hoped that a decision will be
made as soon as possible as continuation of rotations into the
second semester may delay the taking of departmental required
courses. Year One
Curriculum
The annual
Graduate Studies Bulletin (available at website
) lists, with a brief description, all graduate course offered by
the University of South Carolina, arranged by graduate program and
department. The Master Schedule (accessed from the Registrar's
website
) lists which courses are offered
in a given semester, as well as meeting time, place and
instructor. In order to satisfy program requirements, the sequence
below is strongly recommended for all first year Pathology and
Microbiology students:
